Band at Liberty Middle School currently meets during "activity period" - a shortened period in the school day set aside specifically for the performing arts ensembles (band, orchestra, choir). At times, other groups and organizations will meet during this same block of time. While students enrolled in band are obligated to their ensemble first, arrangements can be made with Mr. Campbell to attend both.

Sectionals are small group, like-instrument lessons where students practice and perform playing assignments to ensure they are progressing on their instrument. They learn and practice music theory to deepen their understanding of the workings of music. They can work individually with Mr. Campbell on concert music. Sectionals meet during class periods during the day. If a test or quiz or other event is happening in class that can't be missed for a sectional, accommodations can be made with Mr. Campbell in advance of the sectional. Sectionals are a necessary part to ensure the success of the bands at Liberty.

Below are descriptions of the ensembles offered in the band department at Liberty.

LIBERTY 6th GRADE CONCERT BAND: The Sixth Grade Concert Band is a performance group in which the major emphasis is placed on learning the fundamental basics of proper instrumental techniques such as rhythms [counting], intonation, tone production, articulation, technique, terminology, musical styles, and responsibilities associated with belonging to a large performance group. Students will be required to participate in all performances and must attend all sectionals. Beginners at the middle school level may participate, and will be included as a part of this group. Beginners and students switching instruments are encouraged to seek private instruction outside of school. Opportunities and materials are available for participation in solo and small ensemble work. Auditions are given for chair placement within the band.

LIBERTY 7th – 8th GRADE CONCERT BAND: The 7th -8th Grade Concert Band is designed for experienced instrumental students who have mastered basic fundamental techniques and have proven themselves to be advanced in musical abilities and maturity. 7th –8th Grade Concert Band members are challenged with the finest and most demanding band literature of varying styles commensurate with the ability level of the group. Students are required to perform at all scheduled concerts, are members of the marching and pep bands, and must attend all sectionals. Opportunities and materials are available for participation in solo and ensemble work. Auditions are given for chair placement within the band.

LIBERTY PANTHER JAZZ BAND: All students enrolled in 6th, 7th or 8th grade band may audition for the Liberty Panther Jazz Band. Students not enrolled in band at Liberty may also audition to be part of the jazz band. Audition materials are handed out in the 2nd quarter, with the auditions held soon after. Rehearsals are held once a week after school (3:00 – 4:30). They will perform at the Winter and Spring Concerts, and the IGSMA District contest. Other performances for this group may be added. Notification will be sent to parents as soon as the director is notified.

LIBERTY MARCHING PANTHERS: Following their 6th, 7th, and 8th grade years, band members take part in three summer parades: Worden Homecoming (typically the Saturday of the weekend before Father's Day), Glen Carbon Homecoming (typically the Saturday of Father's Day weekend), and a parade through Six Flags (typically the day after the Worden parade). Dates will be determined sometime during the Spring semester, and will be shared when the director has the information. Uniform for all of these performances will be the summer band shirt, khaki colored shorts, and tennis shoes.
